HELL IF I CARE FORUM • Warren of the future, a brave new world
Beaty Warren Middle School seventh graders (from left) Paige McCullough, Rachel Cecco, and Olivia Ashbaugh, show a portion of the city they designed for the National Engineers Week Future City competition held in Pittsburgh. The Beaty team received the award for Most Innovative Design of Infrastructure from the engineer judges.

And what will the future bring?
-- The Lighthouse Esso Station is returning
-- The parking garage gets a floor higher and will be able to pop popcorn under its clear roof dome.
-- The WTO will change its name to The Globe and decorate its HQ accordingly
-- Kimberly-Clark will open a red-brick factory downtown.
-- All of the above will be washed away by the wall of water on the horizon from the failed Kinzua Dam.

HELL IF I CARE FORUM • Hitch up the wagon. We's off to the mall
Mall owner promises new retailer by end of March
January 30, 2012
By BEN KLEIN (bklein@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer
A new store will be opening in the Warren Mall by the end of March, according to mall owner Mike Kohan.
Label Shopper will occupy the former 10,000-square-foot site of the Dollar Store near Big Lots and "everybody's excited," Kohan said. [define "everbody" who is excited that a spot vacant for 3 years will be filled by a Blair wannabe]
..The potholes were patched last summer, but Kohan abruptly ended the interview with the Times Observer before he could discuss the other improvements to the mall on Friday. [probably had to go use the restroom because he was so excited he almost wet his pants]
...The directory of the Warren Mall, which still bears George Zamias' name, lists 68 store fronts, eight of which are currently in use. [does this count the clump of machines vending stale gumballs in front of kmart as a food court?]
maybe we should investigate state grants to turn the vacant storefronts into an arts community.

HELL IF I CARE FORUM • Charter School Another Name for Tax Theft
Why is this not a crime perpetrated on the tax payers who will fund this abomination just so a relative few will be able to go to a basketball game at good old Ike?
Why is Bortz, the great protector of the over taxed, willing to commit County money to this irrational project. Possibly, he should get his head out of his blue and gold a$$?
Can the taxpayers , who do not bleed blue and gold but green, sue?

HELL IF I CARE FORUM • Giffords resigning from congress
Terrible tragedy, wonderful person, valiant effort to survive and go through rehab, an inspiration to all.
Having said that and gotten it on the record, let's look at this objectively from the perspective of the private workplace.
She was injured at work. Anyone else would be offloaded into the workmen's comp system long ago and would likely be fighting rulings on claims and benefits. Instead, she stayed on the House payroll -- and benefit plans -- for more than a year, showing up for work once or twice in ceremonial circumstances.
In the real world, chances are you'd exhaust your sick days, your vacation days. Then there's 12 weeks of unpaid family/medical leave (which employers are even allowed to overlap with the aforementioned sick and vacation days). If you have short-term disability insurance, you'll get partial pay while you're off.
Eventually, though, most employers won't hold that job open for you, especially once it's obvious that you are nowhere near recovered enough to perform your full job duties. I've actually seen this happen twice to co-workers who exhausted all their time off and are no longer with the company.
Then there's also the matter of how supposedly important every vote cast in congress and the even more important matter of her 600,000+ constituents going a year without a voice in congress, other than the administrative work the un-elected office staff could perform.
as i said, terrible tragedy, etc. But had this been in any other line of work...
